Legendary Entertainment is partnering with Hasbro Entertainment for a live action adaptation of 'Magic: The Gathering', the first in a TV and film universe for this billionaire intellectual property and the first trading card game ever dating back to 1993.
Canadian filmmaker Matt Johnson, known for his award winning movie 'BlackBerry', is the one in talks to direct this first film, with no information for the studio about who will be taking care of adapting this screenplay.
Johnson is an indie filmmaker, and if the deal ends up going forward, this will be his first film with a major studio and his first blockbuster with a major budget, considering films on the same line like 'World Of Warcraft' live action with a $160 million budget, or more recently 'Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves' with a $150 million budget.
'Magic: The Gathering', just like the others mentioned before, is a fantasy multiverse with infinite characters and an extensive lore that would give a lot of room for the writers room to get creative and explore a lot of different characters and worlds.
Let's hope that this ends up happening and we start hearing more about this project, including the cast and the writers so we can have an idea on what to expect, if it will be something more serious like an epic adventure fantasy movie, or something more light hearted and fun like an adventure comedy.
Either way, we'll probably won't be hearing anything from this until the end of the year, or even 2026.
