Last night we finally put an end to 2025 Awards season, with the unexpected winner of the night 'Anora' winning 5 out of 6 nominations, surprising everyone after not taking home some of the other big awards in the season.
This season was full of scandals and controversies, with the biggest of them all being 'Emilia Perez' having 13 nominations despite how problematic and insensitive both the movie and the team behind was, including a myriad of terribly racist, xenophobic and islamophobic tweets by Best Actress nominee Karla Sofia Gascón.
Fortunately, 'Emilia Perez' only won 2 out of 13 nominations, with them being Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña and Best Song for 'El Mal', while the night took a favorable turn towards Sean Baker's 'Anora', giving him not only a Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing win, but also two of the most important accolades: Best Director and Best Picture.
All of his films always debut to rave reviews and the public goes crazy over his work, but this was the first time he was up for the Oscars and he won them all, while Mikey Madison won Best Actress in a Leading Role, becoming one of the youngest winners in this category in the history of the Academy.
The only nomination that Anora missed, was Best Supporting actor were Russian actor Yuri Borisov was up for his role as "Igor".
First time nominee Kieran Culkin was the winner of Best Supporting Actor, while Adrien Brody (despite the Artificial Intelligence use controversy) won Best Leading Actor for 'The Brutalist'. 'Wicked' was another one of the leads of the night winning 2 technical categories for Best Production Design and Costume Design.
It was a really close competition throughout all of the season for such impactful films like 'The Brutalist' and 'Anora', and of course the implications of such a brutal and fresh Horror film like 'The Substance' to be up for all major categories
Let's see what this year in cinema brings, and if the awards for 2026 will be as interesting or controversial like this one.
