The first teaser begins with a flashback with Jennifer Lopez's character giving birth to a daughter she was forced to give up. An FBI agent with whom she has come to an agreement tells her that the only way to protect her daughter from two dangerous assailants on the loose is to disappear.
"I'm a killer, but I'm also a mother," Lopez's character says during the trailer as she stabs, shoots or headbutts the bad guys she mercilessly murders. After emerging from her remote hideout in the Alaskan wilderness, nothing will stop her in her quest to rescue Zoe, her 12-year-old.
Directed by Niki Caro, the creator of Disney's Mulan, The Mother also includes Joseph Fiennes and Gael Garcia Bernal in its star-studded cast.
Jennifer Lopez last played an action character in the 2012 thriller Enough, where she plays a mother looking to get out of a domestic violence relationship. "I knew Jennifer was the only actress for this role", The Mother director told to PEOPLE. Niki Caro says the film is very powerful because it puts a mother at the center of an action movie, as the big protagonist, and that it is "a gift to mothers," a way to celebrate them.
In addition, some of Jennifer Lopez's most iconic films are Selena, where she played the murdered singer; Wall Street Hustlers, where she led a group of strippers who swindled their clients; or Marry Me, her latest musical comedy with Owen Wilson.
In fact, the movie 'The Mother' (The Mother) with Jennifer Lopez premieres on May 12, 2023 on Netflix. It is one of the most anticipated films of the streaming giant for this season.
