A24's biggest trait its producing and distributing weird and out of the box movies, especially when it comes to horror, and 'OPUS' is their upcoming horror feature starring internet darling Ayo Edebiri.
Opening at the Midnight Section of the Sundance Film Festival this January and coming to theaters in the United States this March 14, the directorial debut of Mark Anthony Green will be a psychological horror film where writer Ariel Ecton (Edebiri) gets an invitation to join a former pop star who disappeared under mysterious circumstances 30 years, finding herself trapped in his property surrounded by journalists and fanatics willing to do anything to get close to him.
'OPUS' is one of the first A24 releases of the year, with John Malkovich (Being John Malkovich), Amber Midthunter (Prey), Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus) and many more joining Edebiri and making a really eclectic and interesting cast. With movies like this, is better when we don't know much details about the plot going into it, so it wouldn't be a surprise if the trailer doesn't reveal much more.
But we have to expect sick twists and lots of tension while dealing with some important social commentary, most likely about the entertainment industry, fan culture and the predatory world of celebrity journalism.
In the new look, we can see the cast gathered around in a fancy dinning room, with a figure (Malkovich) above them snatching everyone's attention. Ominous, eerie and intriguing, to say the least. Let's hop that 'OPUS' can live up to the expectations and become a relevant piece of horror of the year 2025, since we know this is a genre that always causes a lot of conversation.
