'The Wedding Banquet' is an upcoming comedy by distributor Bleecker Street, a remake of the 1993 Oscar nominated movie of the same name by Ang Lee, a dramedy about a man getting into a lavender marriage to hide his gay lover from his conservative parents while getting his new wife a green card and a chance for a better life.
In this new reimagining by director Andrew Ahn ('Fire island', 'Driveways') with a screenplay by Ahn and James Schamus (with this marking their second collaboration as Schamus was the writer of 'Driveways'), we follow two gay couples, Min (Han Gi-chan), a korean man living in the United States with his boyfriend Chris (Bowen Yang) and their roommates Angela (Kelly Marie Tran) and Lee (Lily Gladstone).
While Min is hiding his relationship from his grandmother May (Joan Chen) back in Korea, Lee and Angela are looking to have a baby of their own, and when duty calls, they come up with a plan to have Min and Angela marry each other in order to get his family happy, a green card, and most importantly, a baby for Lee and Angela. Everything getting more serious when May decides to visit their home.
The movie had the first screening back in Sundance this past January, and it got rave reviews by the atendees, with the movie holding 95% of positive reviews in Rotten Tomatoes with over 20 reviews, and finally, the movie is opening in theaters for the United States this April 18.
